If you are not eligible to enroll in Korean National Health Insurance (KNHI), you may apply for the HIV/AIDS Medical Expense Assistance Program for Unregistered Foreigners.
This program provides financial support covering 90% of HIV treatment costs up to 8 million KRW per year for undocumented foreigners or refugees living with HIV. The coverage limit is renewed every January, and you still have to pay for the remaining 10% of the cost.
If you are interested in applying, please review the checklist below: 1. Have you ever had an HIV test in Korea? 2. Have you been notified of your HIV-positive status through a public health center(보건소) in Korea? 3. Do you need financial assistance for HIV/AIDS treatment due to financial hardship? 4. Do you have a passport (used when entering Korea) or any form of identification to verify your identity? 5. Do you currently have a place of residence? 6. Are you in a situation where you cannot enroll in Korean National Health Insurance? 7. a) Has your permitted period of stay in Korea expired? b) Or, have you applied for a G1 visa and hold refugee status?
If you answered “Yes” to all 7 questions above, you may be eligible for the program. Please prepare the following documents and visit the public health center in area of your residence or your work: 1. A copy of HIV/AIDS Medical Expense Assistance Request Form [Unregistered Foreigners] 2. A copy of your identification (passport, ARC-Alien Registration Card, traveler certificate, or certificate of alien registration) 3. A copy of proof of residence (lease agreement, a witness statement verifying residence, or certificate of alien registration) 4. A copy of HIV Assistance for Unregistered Foreigner Self-Checklist
The registration process is strictly confidential, and your employer or acquaintances will not be informed. In addition, the information will not be shared with immigration authorities or other government agencies.
미등록 외국인도 저희 KHAP 또는 전국 보건소에서 HIV 무료 익명 검사를 받으실 수 있고, 검사 결과는 출입국 등 다른 기관이나 수검자의 지인, 직장 등에 공유되지 않으므로 안심하고 검사를 받으셔도 된다고 안내해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
다만 현재 질병관리청에서는 예산 등의 사유로 해당 지원사업을 적극적으로 홍보하고 있지 않은 것으로 알고 있어서, 추후에는 직접 해당 지원사업 관련된 내용을 안내해 주시기보다는, 해당자에게 보건소나 저희 KHAP로 연락하시면 관련 내용을 안내 받을 수 있다고 안내해 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
